REVIEW – Bakerdays Letterbox Cake

Cake, you say? Cake that comes through the letterbox? Delivered to your very door? No way! Really?!

As a blogger, when review opportunities come around I always consider “does this fit my blog?”. That’s unless there is cake on the horizon! Needless to say that when Bakerdays approached us to review one of their letterbox cakes, I jumped at the chance.  I mean, who doesn’t love cake?

What do Bakerdays have to say about their cakes?

“BakerDays is a Personalised Celebration Cake Specialist, providing quality personalised cakes for all occasions. The delicious range of recipes and sizes are available for delivery 6 days a week, and if you order before 2pm, BakerDays can deliver the very next day!
The Letterbox cake is the baby of the BakerDays family. Being just 5” in diameter, it fits perfectly through the Letterbox allowing you to surprise anyone with the most delicious personalised gift.”
I had my concerns about letterbox cake. Would it be fresh? Would it be tasty? Would my postman run off with the goods? But I chose a lovely design on the website and put my order in, complete with personalised text. Bakerdays offer vanilla, Belgian chocolate, gluten free, dairy free or fruit cake in terms of flavours. I went for vanilla – nice and simple! Then I waited… coffee cup at the ready.
13515208_10156984670555580_1687305498_nA couple of days later a suspiciously interesting looking box dropped through my letterbox and managed to not be mauled by the dog. I ripped open the box and was greeted by a lovely tin, a card and a little tube of Love Hearts, which I thought was a lovely touch.  I have to admit, had I now known that this was coming I would have been very surprised when I opened up the packet to reveal cake!
I had picked a design with Amy in mind as a little thankyou from Eden, so I wasn’t able13535713_10156984670415580_556287836_n to immediately tuck into the cake. I waited for Amy to get home, occasionally pacing and looking at the packet and then my watch. (I’m kidding. It wasn’t this intense!) I did have a quick look at the cake itself and was impressed by how sharp and bright the colours and text were. The cake and icing looked absolutely delicious. It was displayed on a cake board, which would make removing it from the tin later that little bit easier.
13514285_10156984670425580_1542201634_nSoon Amy arrived home and I made hot drinks – obviously you can’t have cake without a hot drink! – before serving it up. The cake would comfortably serve four. We had a slice each at the time and another slice later. My concerns about freshness soon disappeared as I had a taste. The cake was not in any way dry and had a lovely understated vanilla flavour. The icing was beautifully sweet and just the right amount of thickness. Any more would have been too much, I think.
We both very much enjoyed our letterbox cake and would 100% consider one as a gift in the future. The letterbox cakes retail at £14.99 plus postage and are great value. They stay fresh up to fourteen days and can even be shipped internationally!  I love that the whole idea is a little unusual and I love the presentation. I know I would feel really special if one of these arrived for me. There’s lots of different designs for all occasions on the Bakerdays site and you can even add your own photographs and text for a more personal approach.
